What are YouTube Ads? (The simple guide)

YouTube is still bigger than all the other social media platforms. (And every other website, too, except for Google.) With over 2 billion logged-in monthly users, this represents a huge opportunity for advertisers, if done correctly.

We’re sure you’ve watched YouTube and at some point, have seen the ads appear either before or during a video.

To advertise on YouTube, you’ll need a YouTube channel (we can set this up) and of course, some videos uploaded.

The targeting is similar to Display Ads with some significant differences.

Interests

Google understand what people are interested in and what type of videos they watch on YouTube. From this Google builds up “interests” – it’s actually a bit more technical and involves a few more aspects but let’s keep it simple. From these interests, we can build up a profile of people that are likely to be interested in your product or services.

Google Search Terms

One very effective way of targeting customers on the Display Network and Gmail is to use what they have already searched for on Google Search. In a similar way to Search ads, we’ll build a list of highly targeted search terms (keywords) and include an additional list of keywords to rule out (negative keywords).

Specific Channels

We can target specific YouTube channels and videos that are relevant to your business and products.

Remarketing

Remarketing aka retargeting targets people who have already been on your website but have not converted or bought something. You can see much more detail on how remarketing works by clicking here.

Exclusions

On top of thinking about what people you want to include, it’s also important to focus on what you don’t want. We can exclude sites that contain sensitive content like sex, bad language, conflict, etc. Some clients would also prefer to exclude sites flagged as adult or are gambling sites. We can also make sure the ads are only shown at the top of websites, increasing their effectiveness and reducing costs.

Precision Targeting

After targeting the right people and excluding the sites where you don’t want your ads to show, we’ll also optimise to further ensure precision targeting. Location, Day of the Week, Time of the Day, Age, Mobile vs Desktop, Gender, and Income Levels are all available to be tweaked to make your campaign more effective. This service comes as standard in all our campaigns.
